2019 has been a nonstop burlesque year so far!
It’s been about a week since I last posted because I’ve been feeling the glitter crash pretty hard these days. 2019 has been nonstop so far in the best way, so trust me I am not complaining! I feel very blessed. I’m just usually pretty low-key and this is the most action I’ve had in my life since I was 21, and my body is like “slow down!!”
But nope… not slowing down for at least one more month!
Ever since I got back from the House of Knyle retreat with Egypt Blaque Knyle in Los Angeles, I’ve been filled with inspiration and gratitude. Every song, every melody begs for me to dance no matter where I am. I have felt strong and quietly confident. The most surprising thing of all is that I have felt the effects of Egypt’s mentorship more in my personal life - I’ve felt a lot more focused in library school, at work, and with my family as well. I’m breathing more, being more assertive, and getting shit done. I even finished my taxes already!
But on the down side, I’ve been super sick with a horrible cold. My body is screaming at me. I lowkey hate to travel and have never been one of those Insta-friendly wanderlust people. I only fly when there’s money or prestige involved, real talk. Not impressed by foreign locations… I guess it’s the Texan in me – we pretty much hate everywhere that isn’t Texas. Lol. The trip to L.A. was a grand total of 16 hours of flying, all within about a day and a half! Anything for la familia Knyle.
And then this past Saturday, I rode the gotdamn MegaBus to Richmond for Afrotease. Afrotease itself is AMAZING - anyone who attends is transformed, ask around - but that Megabus was freezing and people were very, very strange, to put it lightly (I am about 150% an elderly woman was masturbating in the seat in front of me… she moaned. Loudly. Nonstop.) Pretty sure whatever nasty bug I caught happened during that 6 hours I spent on the stupid Megabus back and forth to Richmond! Anything for Afrotease.
Two of my best friends who live in VA came to the show, and I had a blast watching them have a blast! Lol. Sometimes when I’m at fun shows like Afrotease, I try to hide and pretend I’m still “only” a burlesque fan and simply enjoy the show. I opened up for Afrotease - you can catch my full performance in the video up top! - so I really got to sit back and watch the cast work it. We were also lucky to see headliners Jezebelly from Chicago and Cherry Antoinette from Dallas - both ladies I’ve followed and adored on Instagram for some time now. They were just as awesome in real life!
I hated to do this, but I had to jet out early to catch the stupid gd Megabus, and I missed curtain call. Apparently, everyone twerked. I always miss the good stuff.
A quick and dirty Afrotease this time around, but a beautiful one nonetheless! I was in bed by 2am, and took the next whopping 3 days off from work at the library because of how sick I am. This is my first day back at work, and I decided to take a break bc oddly enough, I’m like a little librarian machine today and got a lot more done this morning than I expected!
Verdict: Even while sick and possible dying from glitter crash and Megabus Crud, burlesque does wonders for the soul and spirit. I’m not just surviving, y’all… I’m THRIVING. *breaks down coughing*
Next performance: a double whammy of classic sass and ass at Pies n’ Pasties, presented by the evil genius Callie Pigeon of Les Folies Derriere at Dangerously Delicious Pies on H Street N.E. in D.C.. Y’all best be there!
This is a really, really cool venue that I believe is new to burlesque, so let’s bring in a great crowd and give them the ride of their lives. I’ll be doing my all-pink bubbly classic number, and then a darker, sassier Bettie-Page-esque act as well. Should be a really beautiful show!
Plus, PIE. of the AMERICAN KIND, if you get my gist!
